Welcome guest blogger JoAnne Kenrick

80s, The decade of mainstream erotica

Hi, Dawne, thanks so much for allowing me to blog here, today. It's an absolute honor!

Hi to you, too. Yes, you! Thanks for dropping by to read my blog post :) For those of you who don't know, I have been taking my had at writing a romance series set in the 80s. I do have a current release out, which is a contemporary paranormal, but my infinity with the 80s led me to try out a new genre. And what's great about this is, I get to listen to all the songs from my teenage, have a crush on Corey Haim and River Phoenix days. My 80s novella is much, much hotter than my usual style, maybe I've found my calling? Or maybe it's the 80s movies I've been watching to draw inspiration from. Yeah, not only did that decade bring us awesome John Hughes movies to revisit, and similar type rom coms with angsty teenagers, but we also have the adult 80s romance movies that were borderline porn. Yeah, you remember them? *fans self down* Don't pretend you don't.

Let's get straight to the good stuff... there are three movies that stand out in that category, movies that, in my opinion, really tested the boundaries of the 80s. They set in stone what will be accepted and scoffed upon within movies. Nine And A Half Weeks. Wild Orchid. Red Shoe Diaries were the raunchy ones that stand out to me. But I'm sure there are more!

Oh, you want some help remembering? Okay...

Nine And A Half Weeks

I was underage when I saw this, 17, but I know some of my friends saw this a lot sooner than I did. It was their talk of the movie that actually kept me clear of it for a long time -- I was such a sensible teenager. But I remember when I finally did get around to watching it, I was kinda shocked. Not because it was sexy, but because people were calling it sexy -- all I got from it was a psycho degrading a silly woman who likes to dress-up. Obviously I was too young to understand the erotic and romantic content of the movie. I saw it again, many years later, and LOVED it.

Wild Orchid

I saw this movie more or less straight after having seen Nine And A Half Weeks, like many woman of the world, I imagine. I blame it on Mickey! This story is much more sensual than 9 1/2, in my opinion. Does it not have a beautiful title? My favorite scene is the masked scene, at the beginning; the sexual tension and mystery...wowza. I couldn't find that scene, but this one is memorable, too.

Red Shoe Diaries.

I watched the show when it aired, and loved it. It really is amazing how something so obviously driven by eroticism could be aired, and on regular TV nonetheless. David Duchovny was hot in it, even though he only appeared only at the end, and for the episode conclusions. Did you catch the one that starred Matt LeBlanc? My, there was a naughty secretary in that one; two at a time, tsk. But I only just had a chance to watch the original movie (playing on hulu for free at the moment) while doing 'research' for my book. Oh my, this is a beautiful story; so sad, and so hot. David D is front line and center for this one, as is Billy Wirth (remember him from Lost Boys *swoon*)

So, I ask you, do you remember these movies? What are your thoughts on them? Have you seen other hot goodness from the 80s? Please, share! I love to talk movies as much as I love to talk books, even better when they're sexy 80s ones :)

I also ask,if you could pick the actors to play parts in a re-make of The Red Shoe Diaries, the TV SHOW, who would you pick? And yes, David D would still have to play the role of the lonely man with a dog, so don't go there LOL

You'll also be able to find all my social media accounts there, too, so you can add me and keep up to date on my first 80s book that's sure to swirl back into a deliciously hot time warp.

  1. Sadly, I don't believe I've ever seen any of these movies. 9 1/2 weeks looks kind of familiar, but I think I was a little young for these when they came out.
The clips are very sexy though. Surprisingly so, considering the last one was for tv. I think Duchovney could play the role again, maybe with Ryan Reynolds?
    Thanks for the clips.

  2. I still love 80's movies! Two of my favorite sexy although maybe not erotic are Dangerous Liasions with John Malkovich and Glenn CLose. That was really hot. And America Gigilo. I remember getting my mom to drop me off at the theatre so I could see that several times. I also loved the "teen sex" and angst movies like John Hughes. But also "Fast Times at Ridgemont High". Ah...I did love the 80's!

  4. I didn't see 9 1/2 weeks until I was in my late teens. Actually saw it on a trip to London with my college marching band. So mostly I was just all geeked-out-excited about goin' to the movies in a foreign country.

I don't recall finding it all that sexy. I think I found it creepy.

  6. I think an 80's romance series is a great idea. There are so many wonderful movies from that decade. Two of my favorites are Dirty Dancing and Fatal Attraction. The playlist you choose will sure be a walk down memory lane. Have fun with it!

    yea, 80s talk! I love it :)

John Hughes, yeah, I can binge on his movies all day long! Ferris Bueller, Pretty in Pink...they're all great.

But I love the sexy side of the 80s, too. Fatal Attraction, eek, the Sharon Stone 'bush' scene was discussed over and over on the TV during the release week hehe Everyone was in shock! *rolls eyes*

JM, if you like your movies hot, and are a fan of the 80s, then I highly recommend checking out 9 1/2 weeks!

Red Shoe Diaries, the show, used to play on Friday nights... I must have been all but 17/18. Looked forward to it every week, and stayed up really late so I could watch hehe. But the movie, like I said above, I only just got to see that and it's a beautiful film...very poetic in many ways.

And someone just mentioned Fresh Horses and Less Than Zero...Andrew McCarthy... on my Facebook link post to this blog. Anyone seen either of those movies?
